Fruit Growers Express

This Fruit Growers Express refrigerated box car, built in 1924, sits on display at the Sacramento Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California. Refrigerated cars, or "reefers" had a tremendous impact on California agriculture because they allowed perishable produce to be shipped and sold acorss the country. Cooling was effected with the use of ice so the cars were restocked at icing stations to keep the cars' contents cool. This need for special care gave the cars, or "fruit blocks" special priority over other railroad traffic.
